Waveboards, also known as caster boards, are a relatively new invention and a novel take on board sport designs. It consists of two boards (or decks), each with one independently swiveling caster mounted underneath. The two decks are joined by a torsion bar that is spring loaded in such a way that it always wants to rotate the two decks to be on the same plane.

How does one ride a Waveboard?

The rider puts one foot on each deck and twists his or her hips in an oscillating motion which causes his or her feet to alternatively pivot up and down. This twists the decks in opposite rotational directions along the axis of the torsion bar, which makes the wheels travel along the ground in a lateral sine wave motion, like the way a snake moves, which propels both rider and board forward.

Despite (or indeed thanks to) its almost physics-defying locomotion, waveboards have proven extremely popular among the younger crowd, mostly school going children thanks to the novel and fun way of propelling oneself without having to touch the ground with one's feet.

Studies were done in some countries where waveboards were incorporated into the PE (physical education) curriculum, and the results were promising, showing both reduced rates of obesity and truancy.
