History of Skateboarding
Skateboards started as a way for surfers in California the 60s to be able to practice their sport during the low seasons. It would take several decades for it to evolve from cruising the pavements to accidentally discovering the ability to get more speed and 'air' in the dried out backyard pools during the 1976 California drought - as seen in the semi-autobiographical movie "Lords of Dogtown" - which gave birth to the modern skatepark bowls, verts and ramps as we know them today.
Skateboarding can be said to have peaked in the 90s with superstars Tony Hawk, Rob Drydek & Bam Margera dominating the covers of skateboard magazines and the creation of the X-Games which brought it into the mainstream. Fun side note: 90s skateboard culture is best encapsulated in the movie "Mid 90s" that is sure to transport older Millenials into a nostalgia trip!
Today, skateboarding enjoys moderate popularity as many newer "alternative" sports have sprung up like inline skating, mountain biking, and skateboarding's more laidback, midlife-crisis-middle-aged-adult-friendly cousin - longboarding.
What Are Longboards?
Longboards, are in a way, a throwback to the earlier days of skateboarding when the purpose was to cruise the pavement rather than throwing shapes in the air. They are generally at least 33" in length, and the boards are designed to be flexible and comfortable over moderately rough surfaces like asphalt.
Seasoned longboarders are able to "carve" their way along by shifting their weight and flexing the board to drive the wheels forward without ever touching the ground. In recent times, longboard dancing has also gained popularity, inspired by "boardwalking" or fancy footwork on the surfboard. It has particularly gained momentum in Korea & China, no doubt helping to drive a global trend forward.
