yogi and her perfect yoga mat

There are many styles, or types of Yoga from Ashtanga Yoga to Restorative Yoga, each with their own specifity and needs
The yoga mat is the essential accessory to this practice. Follow our guide to choose it!

Yogis and Yoginis were only able to choose yoga mats based on it's colour as mats were standardised and made out of just one material : PVC (Polyvinyl chloride).

Today, we have an extensive range which highlights yoga mats to have a varying characteristics: thickness, material, weight and more!

So why get a yoga mat you might wonder? You need to draw a balance between stability for your asanas, while ensuring comfort on your joints. Many of us prefer our mats to be lightweight to allow us to carry it around with ease while some of us are looking for an eco-designed mat! :)

In this guide, I will run through the main points that will allow you to define you and your practice to help you select the perfect yoga mat. :)

Things to Consider

The thickness of your yoga mat determines the comfort of your practice. If the mat is too thin your joints might really feel it. A pain in the knees or wrists might distract you from the practice. If the mat is too thick, you can't feel a strong connection to the floor, which could compromise on stability of your balance poses.

The material of your yoga mat dictates its texture, grip, and weight. Weight is a factor to consider if you carry your mat around often.

Additionally, if you're allergic to latex, avoid yoga mats made of natural rubber.

Determine Your Style Of Yoga Practice To Find Your Perfect Yoga Mat

Yoga allows you to connect to your body, and is one that you personally enjoy the most. It could differ from season to season, based on your lifestyle, priorities and your state of mind.

Perhaps you have unknowingly started to draw towards a certain type of class over time. Your body knows what's best for you. Therefore, seeking the perfect yoga mat for yourself boils down to the kind of yoga you love or prefer.

Our yoga mats have been made to cater to different types of yoga, and with this guide, we are determined to help you find the perfect yoga mat for you! :)

Gentle Yoga

Examples of gentle yoga include Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Nidra Yoga. Gentle yoga focuses on comfort above all else, while will allow you to focus on relaxation of the body and mind. A thicker yoga mat would be recommended.

For Gentle Yoga:
A mat between 5 mm and 8 mm helps limit the impact between your body and the ground and thus protects your back and your joints.

Thickness is especially important when you practice yoga or are required to hold postures longer. For a lightweight option, consider the Club Gentle Yoga Mat (5mm), as it's made from TPE (Thermoplastic elastomers), which gives a nice foamy texture while still being easy to carry around. This material boasts a closed-cell foam made under high temperature, which makes it anti-microbial and easy to clean. This mat is also Eco-friendly with the characteristics of non-PVC, non-toxic, non-heavy-metals and non-irritating odour.

Dynamic Yoga

Dynamic Yoga is more fast paced, and examples include Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, and Hot Yoga. The focus for these types of yoga is to have more stability and grip, as many standing and balancing postures are practiced.

For dynamic yoga:
You should opt for a mat that has a thickness between 3 and 5 mm. A mat that is too thick will make balancing work more difficult.

You'll need a mat with good grip as well, to prevent slipping between postures. Good adhesion is essential.

A sticky yoga mat keeps you from sliding all over the place and helps you maintain your alignment as you move from one pose to another, as well as when you hold poses for several seconds.

Our dynamic yoga mats are made out of a blend of rubber, to ensure your mat stay still on the ground and polyurethane on the top side for good body grip during your poses.
