In ballet, men and boys do not usually wear pointe shoes. Otherwise, girls and boys (and men and women) should choose their demi-pointe shoes based on their level. In general, beginners start wearing full-sole demi-pointe shoes, before switching to split-sole demi-pointes and finally pointe shoes. The main difference is the colour. This is why we offer split-sole demi-pointes in black, beige and white.
Full soles are recommended for ballet beginners of any age. They offer good support to the foot. However, teachers are increasingly suggesting wearing split soles from the start. Split soles are more flexible at the arch of the foot and provide an attractive line through the foot. Often recommended for intermediate or advanced students who already have good technical mastery. It's best to talk to your dance teacher.
The choice of leather or fabric usually depends on your teacher. However, it's also a matter of comfort and product lifespan. The stretch canvas demi-pointe ballet shoes, which are more flexible (the fabric was tested with the top-of-the-range horse riding bottoms), are machine washable at 30°C. The leather demi-pointes are more durable to last longer.
When you choose your shoes, the important thing is for your toes to be supported but not squashed! Your toes should be comfortable in the slipper and not feel stiff. However, you should feel supported. For canvas slippers, we recommend choosing your normal shoe size. For leather slippers, we recommend going one size down if you have narrow feet. Leather shoes do tend to stretch over time.
Yes, of course! When trying them on, stand up and raise up and down on the demi-pointes several times. You can also move from flex to point. You will feel if your toes are stiff or comfortable in the slipper. Your feet should not move around in the slipper but be well supported.
All slippers have a drawstring to make sure they can be perfectly adjusted to your feet. Once adjusted, the excess cord should be cut off. The remaining length should not hang longer than the shoes, nor be made into a loop.
To get you to all of your dance classes, we've designed a cute little bag for carrying all of your kit! Its various compartments mean you can separate your shoes from the rest of your stuff so you won't spend ages searching for your hair pins. Two different sizes are available: the pink is smaller for girls, while the grey (black for autumn/winter 2019) is larger for women. The small fold-down glittery barrel bag is also ultra-practical!
